Fairfax County Tyson's Truck 429 Scale Model

Magazine Review

As seen in Truck Model World Magazine, U.K. July/August 2016 Edition, by Steven Downes. www.truckmodelworld.com

When it comes to highly detailed and realistic models, Fire Replicas has once again delivered with a stunning representation of the in-use Tysons Truck 429 from the Fairfax County fire and rescue department. Based on the Pierce® Velocity® chassis, this tractor drawn aerial is fitted with a 4-section 100’ ladder and powered by a Detroit DD13 engine delivering 500hp.

The model has an impressive size, measuring 14.5” x 2.5” x 3” and has been constructed from 587 individual parts in high def resin, wire, stainless steel, rubber and other composites which result in a museum quality replica exacting in every detail to the original. As with the other models in the range, the custom packaging consisting of a fully lined base with Perspex cover and photo-etched name plate depicting the department and truck name.

The tractor unit has a pronounced front grill with the stars & stripes flag graphic placed behind the chromed frame with a textured diamond plate finish on all standing areas. Clear and tinted plastic lenses for the lighting are used to good effect, as are the various grab handles located along the sides of the body. The clear front and side windows allow for glimpses of the interior, where the grey finished surround encases the driver’s station. You can also make out the crew seating in the rear of the cabin.

The rear chassis has a number of compartments, with the door frames accentuated with silver pin lines and photo-etch door handles which really do look the part. The design allows for storage of extension ladders on both sides and even here, attention to detail is spot on. Access to the tiller cabin is to the rear on the left side only, and the access steps are textured with grab rails finished with silver joints for total realism. The tiller cabin has a fully finished interior with both clear and tinted windows fitted to the frame. Even here, exacting details include the photo-etch screen wiper, grab rails and a number of small lights, all expertly installed.

One of the most interesting aspects of the replica is the way the ladder has been constructed. True to scale, the thickness of the stainless steel ladder sections is an impressive 0.6mm with a water tube running along the underside, terminating with the spray nozzle at the tip of the ladder which has orange painted hand rails. The platform to which the ladder is attached has tiny safety chains and railings which all have the joints painted in silver which again shows the exacting levels of realism. The application of the white stripes along the sides of the model is flawless with a number of tiny safety and instructional labels located throughout the model, even the extension markings have been printed onto the ladder while the Tysons Corner and Fairfax County emblems are accurately replicated on the sides of the tractor.

    Outstanding Replica

Posted by Tim on 29th Dec 2015

As a collector of other replica models I found this one to be the finest I've purchased. The detail is second to none and in some cases hard to believe it was possible. The case is substantial which is needed for a replica of this caliber. I will continue to watch for others I want to buy.

    Finally

Posted by Chad Simons on 26th Dec 2015

I am so excited that a new, high quality model fire truck company is starting up. Ever since Code3 shut its doors, I have been missing these. The Fairfax model Tiller is an amazing replica. It is extremely detailed and looks great on my shelf next to the old Code3's. I have never seen the exact truck in person, but this model seems to be a great replica. These are higher priced than previous companies, but are also a larger scale and seem to be higher quality. I am hoping to save my pennies for some more models.

    Simply OUTSTANDING!

Posted by Mike Slepetz on 26th Dec 2015

I have been a collector of high-quality fire apparatus replicas for many years. I have always been extremely demanding about the accuracy, quality and detail of my models. For me, the pinnacle had been TWH. I was disappointed when they went out of business and doubted whether anyone would be able to pick up the torch. I stand corrected. Fire Replicas Fairfax County T429 is an incredible model! While lacking the operating features of some TWH models, Fire Replicas has upped the ante by insuring all details are truly 100% to scale, including and especially the aerial sections. These are so intricate and well executed as to be amazing. The overall fit and finish is flawless and the details are spectacular. It truly looks as if the actual rig was "scaled down" to 1/50th. The use of tiny lenses to represent the various lights on the rig is extremely well done, as are etched metal parts such as slam-locks on the compartments, roof-top A/C grilles, detail on the fifth wheel and all over the rig. Every time I look at the model, I catch a new detail I didn't see before. This model was a "must-have" for me for a variety of reasons. I have always been a fan of Fairfax County rigs as I have a strong family connection to the department. My grandfather and two uncles served with Fairfax County for years and my cousin is currently the officer on the very rig that Fire Replicas produced! Not only did one of my uncles serve, but he is also the manufacturer of Roto-Ray emergency lights, like the one that graces the front of T429 as well as countless other rigs in the area and around the nation. Some expressed concern about the lack of chromed headlight bezels and wheels. In my opinion, these do not really detract from the appearance at all. Sometimes, chrome-plated plastic or metal parts on a small scale model have a tendency to "grab" too much attention, or be too bright in various light sources. Fire Replicas finish on these parts does not overwhelm the model and looks extremely good in different light sources both natural and artificial. My only concern was the use of decals as opposed to pad-printed tampos and painted details (such as the piano hinges on the trailer's compartment doors), strictly from a longevity standpoint. The decals utilized, however, are crisp, clear and legible regardless of how tiny they are. This model has truly become the "crown jewel" in my collection. I was excited that Fire Replicas produced a Fairfax County rig especially one with a tie to my family! I'm hoping to see E429's piece replicated in the future to go along with this simply outstanding tiller!

The first ladder truck from Fire Replicas doesn't disappoint, model is flawless and the ladder detail is second to none. The quality on these pieces is excellent, and is worth the price.

This first tiller is a beauty

Posted by Chris on 23rd Dec 2015

Just received this rig and it's really amazing. Wonderfully detailed and nice color, well protected in its display case. Have a look at the barcode on the cabine and you'll see how fine it's been made: it really works! Simply a need to have for each collector of fire trucks and one of the most beautiful items in my collection! Brilliant job and now looking forward to ordering Kern County's tiller.

    My 1st arrival

Posted by Vin Vinci Cranston, RI on 23rd Dec 2015

The Fairfax TDA arrived yesterday, my first from Fire Replicas. I am a hardcore fire apparatus model collector......just ask my wife! I have been fortunate to be able to have my home Study built out with 2 walls of glassed and lighted bookcases to house my collection. It includes Code 3 and all of the Diamond Plate releases, Ashton, TWH, Corgi, First Gear, Conrad, Smith, Franklin Mint, Danbury Mint, Ertl and DeHaines. The Fairfax TDA measures up in to any and every comparison and evaluation. The attention to detail is amazing and delivers on everything promised on the Fire Replicas website. The only challenge I face is removing it from the base and displaying it in the bookcases. The Fire Replica models will be standout additions to my collection. I can't wait until I receive the next release from my pre-order.
