Stainless steel is the main material for all the fine details including window trim, antennas, mudflaps, various logos, slamlocks, cab access steps and much more. A team of 35 skilled craftsmen and women patiently trim, glue and assembly every component...some so small that a razor-sharp tweezers is required for handling. Syringes are used to apply a minute amount of glue behind each incredibly fine part. Patience, keen eyesight and a very steady hand are the tools of the trade in each hand-crafted Fire Replicas model. Enjoy your walk alongside the assembly lines of this KME Air Unit scale model.

On the front of the cab, the Roto-Ray emergency lighting device is nicely replicated, as is the big old Federal Q siren in the grille. The striped bumper poles & the blind spot mirror add interesting details that accurately set this replica apart from support units on other departments. Roto-Rays are really uncommon on the West Coast & in Canada. In fact, I have only seen 1 Roto-Ray on a Canadian rig (former Ladder 16 in Winnipeg). The 2 fans on the 2 sides of the upper front centre, behind the windshields are a common feature for circulating air within truck cabs. Still, it's nice to see them displayed on this model. Although they face backwards, they'd still help to keep the 2 windshields free of fogging up problems in humid weather. On the rear of the body, the ladder for access to the top of the body is very well reproduced. And the special handle on top of the body to help make the transition from standing vertically to maneuvering into the upper area with the Command Lights & the coffin compartments more safely is a neat detail. I really like the fact that the 2 Command Lights have been incorporated into a rig whose primary purpose is supporting fireground operations by replenishing air bottles (SCBAs). Fire departments are now getting more proactive about designing rigs that fulfil more than 1 role. This helps to mitigate the expense of acquiring the rig by making it more versatile. It was a tough decision for me to choose between this model & the one for Air Unit 1. The fact that this one was discounted first settled the issue. A nice complement to the 2 DCFD pumpers that I have already acquired (E23 & E25).

Once again Fire Replicas drops an absolute bomb on the collecting world that’s full of precision, detail and unmistakable quality. You can actually see detail in the 2 windshield defrosting fans and keys on the keyboard of the doghouse mounted laptop. The stainless steel parts seem to keep getting smaller but more precise with every release. Although it’s a simple piece of apparatus, no pump or aerial device, it doesn’t lack in parts which accentuate details. For example, there is a license plate light, left rear and on the officer’s side , right rear the same light illuminates the dealer logo. Also on the rear is a ladder which provides safe access to the roof, coffin cabinets and inspection of the two Command Light towers. The accuracy of that ladder is phenomenal. As is typical with Fire Replicas, a person can gawk at any respective model for hours and pick out new details. It’s another great addition to the ever growing Washington DC fire and EMS fleet. My only complaint is, someone neglected to supply keys to ignite the generator so we can see the command light towers in action.
