Assembly pictures of Chicago's Classic 1973 Ward LaFrance Pumpers

Character, style and personalization epitomize the Ward LaFrance pumpers that served Chicago throughout the 1970's. Producing replicas of these beautiful rigs that are small enough to fit nicely on a shelf, has been a painstaking process. Over 18 months, each of the hundreds of intricately detailed parts are designed, cast or fabricated, painted, decorated, and trimmed...then organized in small bins, ready for assembly. There is no substitute for the laborious tasks that each of the 35 skilled men and women perform. It is a sight to see as each team member patiently adheres each part to another, consistently analyzing the end result. As you scroll down the assembly pictures, take notice of the parts on each workstation and you will gain a greater appreciation for the process. And don't forget to add these Classic Chicago pumpers to your collection.

About Engine Co. 67 by Joe O'Brien

Engine 67 located on the West Side of Chicago was a very busy engine company with an interesting past on fire truck models. The Firehouse at 4666 W. Fulton housed the engine, Truck 46, and Battalion 23. It was a two story, two bay firehouse. Truck 46 would be placed out of service in 1971 and Snorkel 4 would move into the firehouse at that time. Across the street from the firehouse was the Dowst Manufacturing Company, the makers of “Tootsieoys”. In 1937 “Tootsietoys” introduced a 3-vehicle fire set. The Engine, Chiefs car, and service ladder truck had a strong resemblance to Engine 67, Truck46, and Battalion 23. Then again, the smaller version of toosietoys that came out in the 60’s looked just like a few of the Seagrave’s Chicago ran as well.

    Chicago FD E67, 1973 WLF Ambassador P80.

Posted by Martin MacKinnon on 6th Aug 2025

I just picked up my model of the 1973 WLF (Ward LaFrance) Ambassador lettered for Chicago's E67. I also have the Fire Replicas model of the 1973 WLF for Los Angeles County Fire Department E51 from the TV show: "Emergency!". So, it's fun to compare the 2 models that are from the same era, in fact the same year. Although the compartments on the sides of the rear bodies are very similar, there's a host of details that are unique to each model. Unlike some other producers of fire truck models, Fire Replicas doesn't simply do a repaint of an existing model. On Chicago's E67, the vertical handrails at the entrances to the canopy cab seem to be standard on Chicago rigs from that timeframe. The Aurora Borealis warning lights were popular in Chicago around that time, as well, although pretty rare, otherwise. I like the chrome dress up panel around the front of the cab & on the 2 front doors. The big orange: "67" on the cab roof would have really helped anybody "calling the roll" from above. The deck gun on the diamond plate pad above the rear canopy is a nice feature added to the model. The traffic cones, broom, & rolled up olive drab hosebed cover add interesting details. I like the way that the booster line nozzle on the driver's side has been tucked into the hard suction hose, just like on the picture of the real thing. One particularly impressive aspect on the model is the reproduction of the "WARD LAFRANCE" nameplates around the rig. After viewing the nameplates through a magnifying glass & finding them amazingly legible, I discovered a detail that could easily have been missed, but wasn't. Even though all the letters are capitalized, the "W", "L", & "F" are accurately depicted as being slightly taller to signify their status as true capital letters. Another great addition to my collection.
